LIBRARY TECHNICIAN I
Position Description Mechanicsburg Public Library
Reports to: Director
Works collaboratively with: other staff and community partners
Employment categories: part-time, hourly
Responsibilities: Under direct supervision, the Library Technician provides customer service to all members of the public for circulation of library materials, answering reference and directional questions, maintaining collections of library materials, and assists with planning and presenting programs.
Qualifications: Postsecondary certificate or an associate’s degree preferred. Experience and a high school diploma or equivalency and computer experience required. An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of themselves or others in the workplace is not qualified for this position.
Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs, and computer use. Physical strength and dexterity to frequently lift or push moderate to heavy items (6-40+ pounds) and place on low and high shelves.
Knowledge to acquire and maintain: policies and procedures, equipment, staff, public, information resources, community resources, circulating and reference materials, communication and public relations strategies, and programming specific to the Mechanicsburg Public Library.
Skills & Abilities: Work flexible hours including weekends and evenings. Make accurate change in money transactions and work with money. Utilize both verbal and written communication effectively. Perform clerical tasks. Work effectively with supervisor, staff, and public. Present a positive and professional image to the public. Use computers to retrieve and manipulate data. Duties: Serve all members of the public. Register new borrowers and issue library cards. Answer questions communicated in person, by phone, and digitally. Help people find library materials. Assist people with their research for schoolwork, business, or personal interest. Teach people how to access the library’s resources. Help plan and participate in special programs, such as story times for children and outreach programs. Loan library materials to patrons and collect returned materials. Sort and shelve returned books, periodicals, and other materials. Catalog and maintain library materials. Handle interlibrary loans. Maintain computer databases used to locate library materials. Answer the phone, organize files, and perform other routine clerical tasks. Perform additional duties and assignments as required.
Pay Range: $9.00-$17.60
